The Shocking Truth About the Top-Five Team
Notre Dame sits at number five in the preseason polls, but the head coach says the team is not ready to play yet. That is the real story here. While fans see a high ranking, Marcus Freeman sees a long list of unfinished work before the first kickoff.

The Race Against the Calendar
Freeman knows that time is running out. The season opener against Wisconsin is set for Sept. 6, and the coach says there is very little time left to fix things. He told reporters that the foundation is higher than before, but by Sept. 6, the team faces a massive workload with little time to establish the required foundation.
This is a big deal for the fans. The team looks good on paper, but the coach is worried about the gap between where they are and where they need to be. Leaders and Injuries
The coach also talked about the players who need to step up. He wants his veterans to lead the charge in the locker rooms. Freeman said other guys have to lead their position rooms. A team of those individuals is excelling in guiding their specific room and position.
Health is another factor. The team has a few players who are ruled out for the start of camp. Freeman noted that if players are listed as “limited” and not “out,” he expects them to be full go before the first game. “If it says limited and not out, then we’re confident that at some point there, hopefully before the first game, they’ll be full go,” he stated. The Quarterback Puzzle
The backup quarterback spot is still a mystery. Freeman said the team will not just name a backup for the first game and call it a day. They might change who plays backup as the season goes on. “We know at some point, we have to name a backup for Week 1,” he explained. This season stands out because the Week 1 backup may not remain the backup by Week 6.
The new transfer, Teddy Jarrard, is a talented player who reclassified to get here faster. The coaching staff is working hard to get him up to speed so he can play fast. “It’s not unrealistic for anything,” Freeman said about Jarrard. “Teddy is a talented football player.”
Why the Ranking Might Be Misleading
The team got five first-place votes in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll, which put them behind Ohio State, Oregon, Georgia, and Texas. But the coach is not looking at the polls. He is looking at the practice field. Freeman noted that the way players prepare, combined with their experience, confidence, and talent, makes them who they are.
The schedule is tough too. The Irish will face three teams ranked in the top 20, including Miami at number seven and BYU at 15. There is no room for error. “It’s exciting times for all of us,” Freeman told the media. “We have a lot of work to do before Sept. 6. This is going to be an extremely important period for our football program.”
The coach sees the bigger, stronger, and more explosive players that the staff has built. “They’re bigger, stronger and more explosive as you look at previous years,” he noted. But size and strength are not enough. The team must prove they can execute under pressure when the pads go on.
Freeman is pushing himself and his team to evolve. The finish line is not the preseason poll. The finish line is the first game. If the Irish cannot close the gap between their foundation and their goals in the next few days, the top-five ranking will mean nothing. The work starts now.
